Winscombe’s pack made their dominance tell

Tribute Western Counties North is widely recognised as being one of the most competitive divisions in South West rugby. Any team on it’s day has the potential to win, as Winscombe 1sts, who are near the bottom of the table, showed in December when they defeated league leaders Coney Hill. At the weekend Winscombe travelled up to Chew Valley who are currently second and again had a valiant attempt at upsetting the form book.
The match, played in poor conditions, turned out to be a battle between Chew’s three quarter line and Winscombe’s pack. After an initial period of stalemate Chew were first to strike where some strong running and poor defence saw them score in the corner. A penalty kick stretched the lead before the break while Winscombe played with 14 men following a yellow card.
As the conditions worsened, Winscombe’s pack made their dominance tell and quickly came back into the game with a penalty try at the start of the second half. This was cancelled out with strong running by Chew’s two centres who saw their full back in for a try. Near the end of the game Winscombe again camped on the Chew five metre line and after another string of scrum offences were awarded their second penalty try. As the clock turned red, the visitors made a brave attempt to win the game by running the restart from inside their own 22 but only made it to halfway before spilling the ball and conceding the fixture.
